Why BMI Fails Active People

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). It was designed as a population-level screening tool, not an individual health assessment. It cannot distinguish between fat mass and muscle mass — meaning a lean, muscular athlete and a sedentary person with the same BMI are treated identically.

A 90 kg athlete at 178 cm has a BMI of 28.4 (overweight), yet may have 12% body fat and exceptional cardiovascular health. Better metrics for active people include: body fat percentage, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, VO2 max and resting heart rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Only as a baseline reference. Most athletes — particularly strength athletes — will read as overweight by standard BMI, which is meaningless for their health. Use body fat % and waist-to-height ratio instead. For cardiovascular athletes (runners, cyclists), BMI may be more representative but still doesn't capture fitness level.
Endurance athletes (marathon runners, cyclists) typically 18–22 BMI. Team sport athletes 22–27. Bodybuilders and powerlifters often 25–32+. UFC fighters at competition weight vary dramatically by weight class. BMI is functionally useless as a performance or health metric for any trained athlete.
Body fat percentage is the most direct replacement — measured via DEXA scan (gold standard), bod pod, hydrostatic weighing or estimated via Navy Method tape measurement. VO2 max is the best predictor of cardiovascular health and all-cause mortality. Waist-to-height ratio below 0.5 is a strong indicator of metabolic health regardless of BMI.
